MacNotables #839: Hands-On the New MacBook Pro with Bob LeVitus
Posted by Chuck on November 6th, 2008
Bob “Dr. Mac” LeVitus has been spending some quality time with Apple’s new MacBook Pro, and has some thoughts on the new feature set. Bob provides his impressions of the glossy LED screen, the glass trackpad and the unibody construction. Bob reviews the benefits of the graphics systems, and has some advice on how to configure your new MacBook Pro with RAM and drive space, and what else you might want to get to complete the package.

It’s worth pointing out the following to balance Bob LeVitus’s review:
1) The previous 2 revisions of MacBook Pro also used LED backlighting - it’s not a unique feature of the new model;
2) If the battery life of the new model appeared to match or better that of his old model, it *might* have been due to him comparing a brand new vs. used battery. Macworld’s review of the new model shows it has a slightly lower battery life compared with the previous generation;
3) The Nvidia 9600 is faster than the previous model’s 8600, but the more energy efficient 9400 definitely is not. It would be good to know exactly which MacBook Pro model Bob currently uses because it doesn’t sound like the previous model with the 8600, which should have been able to play games pretty well.
